Prior Consultation for the Plan for Indigenous and Afro-Nicaraguan Peoples (PPIA)
The consultations carried out for the implementation of the Plan for Indigenous and Afro-Nicaraguan Peoples opened dialogue spaces between governmental entities and indigenous and Afro-descendant populations. This exercise of citizen participation is carried out before developing projects that affect communities, complying with the requirements of the World Bank (as long as the type of projects are financed by the Bank). This process of prior, free and informed consultation is carried out in order to take into account the culture, language, customs and religious beliefs of the community, and to generate broad support for the project.
