National Council for Equality of Peoples and Nationalities
The National Council for Equality of Peoples and Nationalities is the deliberative and consultative body established at the national level from the Organic Law of Councils for Equality and the National Law of Participation. It is made up of representatives of civil society and the State with the objective of facilitating and guiding the development and integration of policies guaranteeing rights for the different peoples living in Ecuador while respecting the constitutional principle of pluralism. Created for the 2008 Constitution, it replaced the Council for the Development of Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador (Span. CODENPE). Together with the other councils for equality, it is a central mechanism in the new conception of participation introduced in the Constitution of 2008. Citizens can participate in the process of choosing the consultative councils freely and voluntarily. By 2016, this Council was still in its transition phase from the National Council of Development of the Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador to the National Council for Equality of Peoples and Nationalities.
