Popular consultation on mining and oil exploitation in Fusagasugá
The Popular Consultation on Mining and Oil Exploitation in Fusagasugá was a citizen initiative held on October 21, 2018 in the municipality of Fusagasugá and was headed by the Comité Todos por Fusagasugá. The consultation question was the following: Do you agree or not, that in the municipality of Fusagasugá activities of seismic exploration, exploratory drilling, fracking, production of hydrocarbons and mining on a large scale are carried out? According to the National Registry of Civil Service to reach the threshold was necessary to obtain 34,800 votes. In total 39,175 people voted to reject these activities in the territory, while 202 supported its implementation. With these overwhelming results, this Colombian town became the first in Latin America to prohibit fracking through a mechanism of citizen participation.
